The History of NARC King of the West

For more than six decades, the Northern Auto Racing Club—better known as NARC King of the West—has stood as one of the most respected and enduring institutions in American sprint car racing. From its grassroots beginnings to its modern-day prominence, NARC’s story is one of innovation, fierce competition, and a relentless pursuit of excellence on the West Coast.

NARC was born out of a vision in 1960, when it became a sanctioning body dedicated to premier 410 sprint car racing in Northern California and beyond. That vision quickly became reality, and NARC soon established itself as a proving ground for the sport’s best drivers.

The early years produced a lineup of formidable champions who helped shape the club’s reputation. Drivers like Fred Hunt, Paul Worden, and LeRoy VanConett became household names, while Bill Sullivan emerged as one of the era’s most dominant forces, capturing multiple championships and setting a high bar for those who followed.

The 1990s ushered in a true powerhouse era. Brent Kaeding, paired with legendary crew chief Billy Albini, dominated NARC competition like few before or since. Kaeding’s eight NARC championships defined the decade and cemented his legacy as one of the most successful sprint car drivers in series history.

Over time, the identities merged, creating the NARC King of the West brand—often known as the NARC-King of the West. This combined identity preserved NARC’s club-style roots while elevating the series with the elite stature and recognition that comes with being crowned King of the West.

In late 2025, a new chapter began when Brad Sweet and Kevin Rudeen acquired NARC, bringing fresh energy and vision while remaining deeply committed to the organization’s storied heritage. Under their leadership, NARC continues to showcase the very best in 410 winged sprint car racing on the West Coast.

NARC King of the West remains a symbol of tradition, toughness, and top-tier competition - proof that true racing legacies only grow stronger with time.
